Charlie White

Voici un cadeau que m'a offert mon ami Le Vidéomateur, un livre étonnant du photographe Charlie White.

"Le sujet semble être l'horreur. Photos faites pour le grand format, habilement mises en scène, laissant le regard se promener dans un luxe de détail, au milieu de décors vintage qui ne dépareraient pas une pochette de disque. On retrouve le choc abrasif et onirique que provoquent certaines images fortes de films d'horreur. Citation du cinéma. Si ce n'était que cela...


Mais passé ce premier choc, fascinant s'il en est, vient autre chose. La monstruosité se banalise. Il fau chercher le détail qui tue, c'est le cas de le dire, parmi la normalité. Tous ces gens, enfants comme adultes,, ont complètement intégré le monstrueux dans leur vie sociale, affective ou sexuelle. Revoilà l'érotisme, mais dans quel état. Quoique cette femme bleue soit assez troublante....


Alors, tout, y compris le désir, est remis en perspective. Et les clichés comportementaux, virils, féminins, jeunes et seniors, de la société américaine sont joyeusement dynamités. A moins que le message ne soit politique : et si tous ces gens équilibrés n'étaient pas aussi monstrueux de faire des garden-parties pendant que les kamikazes explosent ?"



Charlie White is an American artist who works predominantly in photography. White blends real people and humanoid puppets, to create art works which introduce life-like monsters into apparently mundane situations. His most famous collection, Understanding Joshua, shows a grotesque puppet named Joshua, representing vulnerability, poor self image and the discomfort of sexual encounters. He has also directed a music video for American indie band Interpol's 2004 single Evil, from their Antics album, using a creepy, life-sized, singing puppet, involved in a fatal car crash. Interpol fans have affectionately named him 'Norman', and have identified him as personifying certain band members.
Wired magazine columnist Jenn Shreve writes, "In Charlie White's surreal world, life is just like the movies - a creep show full of killer special effects." White's work explores the surreal nature of the flesh, whether in his erotic alien series or representing Joshua's vulnerability and self disgust. His work can be found collected in his book Charlie White, which includes details of all three of his major projects. White, unfortunately, has no official web page, though interviews with the man himself can be found on several websites, with examples of his work.
